I always wondered while looking on old Papal Functions why things just looked more “mystical” or just had a strange ambience lacking in the modern functions. (Besides the obvious changes in Liturgy, Vestments, etc). Well, then I saw two pics I had saved, and noticed the change in lighting. Compare the 2 below pics of St. Peter’s. Notice the difference in lighting, the old pic (on top) has the chandeliers stringed together. The new pic (on bottom) has no chandeliers.

Mmm!
The exterior of St. Peter’s used to be lit as well. Sadly candles have not been placed in the sconces on the dome and colonnades since WWII.
I don’t know about the chandeliers, but surely they could revive the red drapes on Saint Peter’s walls. Another thing that Benedict XVI should change is the floor under the papal altar. JPII changed to white and it looks very ugly. They should change it back to red-blood. That should enhance the liveliness of Saint Peter’s, which looks so boring.
