When I was younger, I used to call him ‘El Beard-O’ and thought he looked a bit like a wizard. There was a picture of him with Pius XII in our old parish’s sacristy, with Card. Tisserant seemingly caught in a pensive gaze. He was as awesome then as he is now, LOL.
It’s strange when you see old pictures, you see lots of Cardinals/Bishops with beards, now hardly any.
Might the fact that he was Secretary of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches have something to do with it?
Maybe so. But there where alot of bearded men in old pictures (even though I thought that Latin-Rite clergy were to be clean-shaven) .
