Romanism! Part X (Latest in ongoing series of Romanism!). Most of the below pics are from Mgr. Pierre Pfister’s book on Pope Pius XII which I recently bought. Had to share them.

(JPII, I believe at Westminster Cathedral)
these beautiful images point away from this world to the next , the figure of the Holy Father is majestic and gracious but not over bearing , judgemental or triumphant. I would love to see a collection of pictures of the present Pontiff looking equally an icon of tradition.
I would too, but if B16 keeps giving Marini a free hand, we’ll keep getting the vestments like we saw recently in Austria (Tye-Dye!, on a Pope!)
These are wonderful pictures that show the ‘real’ Pius XII – just have to look at the facial expressions – and not the uncaring tough-nut that some people like to protray.
Thanks for taking the trouble to scan and share them.
Yeah, in a lot of the pictures (which are kind of “official”) he carried himself with Gravitas. But, in many pics taken “aside” seemed to smile alot.
Could the first cardinal, on the right, in the canonization picture, be John XXIII?
Ken,
I’m glad you found a copy of Msgr. Pfister’s book! I’m told it’s exceedingly rare in may parts of the world. These pictures of Pius XII are really something; they’re more than just windows to the past, but witnesses to history as well. Another good picture book is Lothar Wolleh’s huge (literally 2′ by 1′) book on Vatican II called ‘The Council’. It’s filled with lots of great pictures of Paul VI in some of the most sumptuous vestments I’ve ever seen. It costs a small fortune, though.
Pax et Bonum!
Just a query.
In “Roncalli (Future John XXIII) being made Cardinal”, didn’t Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli recieve his gallero from President Vincent Auriol of France {1953} where has Apostolic Nuncio?
Jeffrey: That is indeed Card Roncalli (John XXII)
Arch: Cost about $20. Barnes & Noble (rare/out of print books search) Thanks for telling me about it all those months ago
p.s.: I checked, that Lothar book is at least $80.00. I like pics, but not that much.
Miguel: I think Roncalli recieved the birreta in France, but the Galero was given in Castel Gandolfo.

Ah, yes. Now that irons out my perplex mind =)
Thanks!
PS. How I wish to see the Galero brought back.
The late Archbishop of Manila, Jaime Cardinal Sin’s Galero now hangs from the high-vault ceeling of the Manila Cathedral.
Yeah, I also really like the Galero. It would be something to see a Cardinal a Ermined Cappa Magna with a tasseled Galero walking around!
Traditionally the Galero is hung from the ceiling above a cardinal’s tomb and it has always been said in Rome that when the Galero finally falls to pieces and falls to the ground, only then is that cardinal’s soul released from Purgatory. With some of the present unashamedly liberal cardinals one trusts that their galero’s will be re-inforced with tungsten fibre cables!
