The papal note says that at 4 p.m. on Oct. 30, 1950, during his “habitual walk in the Vatican Gardens, reading and studying,” having arrived to the statue of Our Lady of Lourdes, “toward the top of the hillĀ I was awestruck by a phenomenon that before now I had never seen.”
“The sun, which was still quite high, looked like a pale, opaque sphere, entirely surrounded by a luminous circle,” he recounted. And one could look at the sun, “without the slightest bother. There was a very light little cloud in front of it. “Pius XII said he saw the same phenomenon “the 31st of October and Nov. 1, the day of the definition of the dogma of the Assumption, and then again Nov. 8, and after that, no more.” (Zenit Article)

Nice poetic description of a sun Halo. I wonder if it was the common 22 degree Halo, or the less frequently reported 46 degree version.

Is it normal then to be able to look at the sun without ones eyes watering at all, wearing no sunglasses for up to as long as 10 minutes or even more where the sun itself is opaque except for a tiny bright frame around it as I have seen this myself both in Medjugorje and at home many times in the the past 4 years and I want to know for sure if it is a Miracle. I wrote and asked the people at nasa and they just said it is extremely dangerous to look at the sun at any time of day but I have done so several times and thank God my eyes are fine, not long ago I had an eye test.
I do believe Pope Pius saw a Miracle as I also see and many many other Medjugorje pilgrims do.
Please give us the scientific facts, thank you

“There was a very light little cloud in front of it.” A classic description. It is the cloud (water vapour) in front of the sun that produces the halo (rainbow). It is very easy to underestimate the cloud density, but it is common to see the sun with sufficient cloud cover to prevent damage. the description attributed to Pius XII fits very well the known phenomenon of sun halos. If your observations are different, and so frequent, then please document and film them, so others can judge their bona fides. If you have such a repeatable miracle then I’m sure the authorities will be pleased to authenticate it. The science of sun halos is very well known and easy to find.
It was a Saturday in October and I believe it was 1991. My wife and I attended a Charismatic conference in Rehobeth Beach, DE at the convention center. The conference started Friday evening and ended after mass on that Saturday afternoon.
I had loaded a borrowed portable altar onto my old pick-up and Mary my wife followed in our car and a couple who were friends of ours preceded me on Delaware Rt 9 in their car. We were headed west and Mary stopped for gasoline on Rt. 9, so she was some minutes behind me and our friends.
The sky was mainly clear and I noticed one small cloud moving from the south toward the sun. The cloud stopped right in front of the sun and I could see the sun through it clearly and in comfort. I was driving fairly fast keeping up with my friends who were ahead of me in their car.
Rays of colored light began emitting from the partially obscured sun and not in the usual rainbow order but mixed up and seemed to rotate out from the sun in a clockwise direction.
I had to keep my eyes on the road of course but the sun being in front of me was easily observable. Along with the colors emitting from the sun there was some movement on its face that I could not readily discern.
This phenomena continued for much of the trip until I got near US 13 at Laurel, DE and made a left turn south toward Salisbury, MD. I still could see some of the phenomena as I traveled south, through the right side window of the truck.
When the event started I thought at first it was due to the bluish tint on my windshield’s upper third, but I lowered my head and looked under the tinted area and the radiating colors were still visible and unchanged.
When I arrived at our church parking lot to unload the portable altar the sun was normal.
My wife arrived soon after and helped me get the altar into the church basement and I asked her if she had seen anything peculiar about the sun. She said she had not.
The following week I asked our friends who were in the car ahead of me if they had seen anything strange and they said “no”. As far as I know no one else reported this phenomenon.
That part of Delaware is about a hundred miles north of Wallops Island, VA and the NASA facility and I did inquire if there had been any rocketry experiments producing colored clouds. There were none.
I kept my experience to myself for some months and then mentioned it to my wife at home and friends at a prayer meeting. Since it happened in October near the anniversary of the Miracle of the Sun at Fatima, my friends and I decided it was a manifestation of that Miracle which for some unknown reason I was allowed to witness.
