Oh, those silly trads wanting to restore the Sedia Gestatoria..Don’t they know it’s old-fashioned, and stupid? It’s just so…so…Romish, so particular! Don’t they know it causes ecumenical problems with our seperated Eastern Brethren? How it elevates the Bishop of Rome!

Whoa! wait, hold on a minute, these fellas don’t look like the Bishop of Rome (the hot pink vestments are a dead give away). These pics are from Episcopal Consecrations of Syrian, and Malankar Bishops. Is there a possibility there is an ancient link with the custom of the Bishop of Rome being carried on his day of Coronation? A common custom of the early Church ?

I’ve often thought the same thing about the tiara…people have said that it’s a symbol of temporal authority, that it would cause ecumenical problems with the East…but ALL eastern bishops wear crowns. And can’t we attempt to teach and emphasize that the tiara represents the Pope’s spiritual authority.
Further, are we to assume that the Orthodox are so stupid as to think that a HAT is a serious impediment towards them accepting the truth? Whether or not the Pope wears it, it changes NOTHING of what we believe, and they’re going to have to accept it if any ecumenical project is to be successful.
Thanks for these, Ken! I especially like the first set of pictures from Damascus - everybody looks so delighted.
Have looked at more of the pictures from Damascus - this: http://www.soku.org/images/MorPhilexinosMattiasBishopordination2007/morphilexinosmattiasbishopordination59.html gives the word “lace alb” a new meaning - so much for “that Italian thing with lace”.
Thanks Gregor, Yeah, that bishop sure is laced up.
I really think that this was something that was done in the early Church. I visible way to show the “elevation” of a bishop on his consecration.
I recall reading that either Bl. John XXIII or Paul VI (maybe both) was utterly white-knouckle terrified when in the SG… If the SG is restored it will be with the caveat that Popes who are miserable in it may by-pass it!
You know, Greek bishops used to be buried sitting in their thrones…
Ha! I think it would be JXXIII, some of the pics of him on the SG, he just looks sea-sick.
Simple, I don’t think it will be restored, and it might even be bad for security. The Pope just sitting up there, it would make a good target.
The post was just to turn over the assumptions of some.
This is great, send a link to the Vatican.
Ken,
I need your help!
I need your e-mail… or e-mail me: latinmass1983@yahoo.com (If it’s not too much trouble).
