The Papal Mass today. What can I say ? So nice to see blatant liturgical abuse done in the presence of the Pope. The “lovely” Indian drum music, with Pan piping in the background. How embarrassing for the Church. The whole country/world was watching, and this was the best American Catholicism can offer? When not playing Aztec pagan pipe/drum music, they were doing a Broadway musical performance. I was waiting for Rum Tum Tugger to come out, and dance in front of the Altar. All the music had bells in the background, yet at the consecration,..not one bell.
At least the Holy Father can see our “Local Liturgical norm” i.e. (silly, banal, and ugly) that American Catholics see at their local parish week in, and week out. The wisdom, and the necessity of the Motu Proprio becomes apparent. Even the priestly commentator on EWTN mentioned the abuses, and the fact that every liturgical malady that Pope Benedict has spoken out against was on display. This was AmChurch saying: “This is how we do things, and we’re not going to change, Pope or No Pope!”.
Another thing, what was with all the Spanish? Are we “Latin America” now? Weird bi-lingualism. The singing in every language at the end of the mass, how stupid. My, if only we had a common language! Oh, wait a second what’s that old language that Catholics use to use, uh.., oh Latin. Gosh. It was just a show, with people clapping at ever little thing. Did that seem prayerful to anyone? Was that Worship of the Most High God? Would our ancestors in the faith have seen that as being Catholic? Hopefully the New York Mass won’t be such an embarrassment. Good Grief!
