May everlasting light shine upon them, O Lord, with thy saints in eternity, for thou art merciful. Grant them eternal rest, O Lord, and may everlasting light shine upon them.
And making a gathering, he sent twelve thousand drachms of silver to Jerusalem for sacrifice to be offered for the sins of the dead, thinking well and religiously concerning the resurrection, (For if he had not hoped that they that were slain should rise again, it would have seemed superfluous and vain to pray for the dead,) And because he considered that they who had fallen asleep with godliness, had great grace laid up for them. It is therefore a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead, that they may be loosed from sins. (Machabees 12:43)

I love the third picture – a solemn requiem and two low requiems going on simultaneously.
lucky luciano, eh? Interesting. Is the colored skull image from Polermo too?
Wonderful pictures..very apt.
Thanks for all pictures in particular those of St Pius X funeral, really remarkable. The picture from Boliwia showing man holding the skulls of relatives on the tray – I have never seen anything like this in my life. Is this a Catholic custom? Maybe he is keeps them in the meantime in one of the cupboards at his place?!?
I do believe it would be Catholic (mixed with local pre-Christian customs I presume).
Thank you for all your wonderful work and for the magnificent and uplifting photos! May I just mention that the photo is not of Pius XII lying in state but Cardinal Mooney of Detroit, who died at the North American College just before entering the 1958 Conclave. This is where this photo was taken.
And I think Cardinals dying in Rome were meant to be laid out in cappa magna, not full pontificals, as we see with Cardinal Veuillot.
