Those are some very good historical photos, especially the one with the portable throne, which we don’t see these days. Was Pius XII the last one to use it, or did John XXIII ever use it?
John Paul I was the last to use it (Ken may have a pic). He refused at first, but was sensibly prevailed on to use it once he understood he’d be able to be seen by more people.
John Paul II, presumably because he was so hale and hearty at the time, refused its use. Too bad, because as he aged it would’ve been much more dignified and practical as opposed to the electronic platforms and scooters that were devised as he became infirm.

Leo, JPI did use it, I have a pic of him. Search: Sedia Gestatoria on the site for the post.

Very nice, as always.
Say, when you open up your photobucket account, do I have to “apply” for a password or are you just gonna open the vaults to the public as a whole?
Just wondering.
Take care and Happy St. Luke’s day,
Leo
Open to all Leo. Happy St. Luke’s to you too.
the staging surrounding the throne in the first picture could easily be brought back today perhaps in white and gold to look less imperial
I guess so, but what’s wrong with red and gold?
There is rather a good picture of Ven. Pope Pius here;
