Wasn’t there some quack con artist doctor who took in the Pope–and after his death was banned by the Vatican that tried some crazy imbalming and it created a stench of the body and other problems.
Yes, unfortunately the embalming was shotty and gas exploded out of the body at one point causing a stench. Some people pointed to this as an omen or whatnot.
